Grand Isle Louisiana is tucked into a smattering of islands in the south, just beyond the coastline. It is three hours from Baton Rouge and two and half hours from New Orleans. Grand Isle Louisiana beaches are the foundation of the main attractions in this area and host to world-class fishing and plenty of beach activities. Highway 1, Louisiana's longest and most utilized highway, is the main route to take when heading toward Grand Isle and the Gulf of Mexico, where the barrier island is situated. There are many things to do in Grand Isle, especially throughout Grand Isle State Park, a beautiful, naturalized component of the island itself.
Grand Isle Louisiana is literally the "end of the road" on Highway 1. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge that accommodates vehicles. During the off season, typically late fall through to the spring, Grand Isle hotels remain fairly empty with the population at about 2,000. Once the warm summer weather settles in, this diverse and rich region welcomes more than 20,000 annual visitors. Without fail, all of them head to the beautiful Grand Isle Louisiana beaches along the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. With such open exposure to the elements, many of the beaches have been re-enforced with boulders, beach grass, and sand, staving off erosion and creating even healthier beaches ideal for many different adventures.
There is a good selection of Grand Isle hotels to choose from, as well as great Louisiana camping throughout the area. There is good variety among Grand Isle hotels. Everything from inns, cottages, cabins, and motels are available to visitors. There are even a few hotels and motels with adjacent piers for great Louisiana fishing right at your fingertips. From small rooms to private family homes, accommodation on Grand Isle Louisiana caters to any combination of travelers. Since fishing is definitely the main activity on the island, many lodging options offer fairly basic rooms ideal for groups of any size of anglers looking more for excellent fishing than luxurious rooms. There are also private camps available to rent, most with private docks and piers.
Grand Isle State Park is ideal for all sorts of activities. Photographers love the diversity of the landscape and the rich wildlife throughout the park. Bird watchers are enthusiastic about the park for the large numbers of migratory birds. Camping is another way to really appreciate the surroundings. Basic sites with electric are a good base for exploring the area further and enjoying the warm ocean breezes and striking night sky. Boaters can launch from the park and enjoy great fishing. Surf fishing is also fantastic. The Grand Isle Louisiana beaches inside the state park are perfect for swimming, sunbathing, crabbing, and beach combing.
Though Grand Isle Louisiana is fairly remote compared to other urban areas like Lafayette and Shreveport, there are many conveniences to choose from. Dining is excellent and a taste of fresh, local seafood should definitely be tried. Shopping is available at department stores and smaller gift shops and stores. There are several grocers to shop at as well as many fast-food chains for a quick bite. With a good selection of amenities, a nice choice in Grand Isle hotels, and loads of things to do, it's no wonder the island population of visitors far outnumbers the locals during the summer.
