A pearl watched over by a dragon and a phoenix.
In China legend has it that pearls fall from the moon into the sea like droplets. Dragons believe there is nothing more precious and that the moon is the most beautiful pearl of all, so much so that more than one dragon covets it greedily. Furthermore the dragon constellation is not far from the moon in the night sky.Long ago the mythical Jade Dragon and the no less mythical Golden Phoenix, found a pebble on the milky way, which they polished so much that it gave off an unparalleled light , capable of producing infinite riches. The Queen Mother of Heaven, having heard about this treasure, wanted to take it for herself. An enormous fight ensued, during which the pearl escaped the clutches of the three protagonists and rolled to earth where it turned into a beautiful crystal clear lake. The Jade Dragon and the Golden Phoenix, who prized their treasure more than anything, refused to leave it and therefore decided to settle permanently next to the lake. This is the origin of the West Lake in Hangzhou watched over by the mountains of the Jade Dragon and the Golden Phoenix.
