Louisiana fishing is one of the most popular outdoor activities in the state. With the huge number of lakes and rivers, as well as the Gulf of Mexico to the south, you will never have trouble finding a great Louisiana fishing hole.

Northern Louisiana / Sportsman’s Paradise:

Near Shreveport you can find Cross Lake. A nice collection of waterfowl, alligators and other wildlife. A rather clean and beautiful lake you can find largemouth bass, bluegill, red ear sunfish and catfish.

In northeast Louisiana by Monroe is the Lake D’Arbonne National Park. An excellent camping site, this lake has some great Louisiana bass fishing, Louisiana cat fishing and a great place for boaters to enjoy other water sports.

Central Louisiana / Crossroads:

North of Lake Charles is the Toledo Bend State Park. This is another of the campgrounds in Louisiana that sits atop a scenic waterfront view. This reservoir is recognized for its excellent Louisiana bass fishing and often home to bass fishing tournaments. It’s also a great place for camping with an RV parking section as well as improved campsites with electrical and water hookup and classic tent sites with no amenities. It is close to nearby attractions like the city of Natchitoches with its historical homes, Cypress Bend Golf resort, and the Rebel State Historic Site where you can see the grave of the unknown confederate soldier and the Louisiana Country Music Museum.

The Wildwood Resort nearby is a fishing resort that offers cabin rentals and great Louisiana fishing charters. There are several boats and even ones that offer room enough for large groups, ideal for families.

New Orleans area:

South of New Orleans is the Fairview Riverside State Park with great Louisiana cat fishing, freshwater fishing and speckled trout fishing. There are also great sites for camping and a local historic site, the Otis House museum, which is on the national Registry of historic places.

You can also catch some good Louisiana fishing charters out of New Orleans, like the Superstrike Charters leaving right out of the Gulf of Mexico from Venice, Louisiana. On board this 30ft Twin Vee you can catch Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sailfish, and Mahi-Mahi.

Southern Louisiana / Cajun Country:

Located south of Lake Charles, Calcasieu Lake is considered one of the most productive estuaries systems on the gulf coast. Beginning with Lake Charles, Prien and Moss Lake, the Calcasieu Ship Channel flows into Calcasieu Lake. This huge lake offers fabulous fishing for red fish, speckled trout and flounder. Marshy shorelines and oyster beds provide ideal schooling areas for redfish.

Probably the best place to fish in Louisiana is the beautiful Atchafalaya Basin. This marsh / swamp area of Louisiana is a great place to find for wildlife and catch some fish. Other area pastimes include crawfishing, frogging, and hunting. This is a premiere area for Louisiana bass fishing, and even some decent Louisiana cat fishing, although restrictions do apply on the size and number you catch so be sure to check with the locals before you start. The swamp is very large, with bayous, pipeline canals and ponds, so it is best to go with a guide when navigating this awesome nature reserve.

Great Louisiana fishing sites are in such abundance, we can’t list them all here. Suffice it to say, no matter where you go on your Louisiana vacation, you are sure to find a nice fishing hole, huge Lake at a State park or great Louisiana fishing charter in the Gulf of Mexico. One of the great things to do in Louisiana is enjoy the outdoors, so on your next trip, plan a little fishing and you’ll be glad you did!
