Although Colorado has an excellent variety of hotels and accommodations, if you want to get up close and personal with the Rocky Mountains, consider planning at least a few days on a Colorado camping trip. If you think about it, camping in Colorado is similar to having ski in/ski out lodging at a Colorado ski area. When you wake up in the morning, instead of having to drive to a hiking, biking or fishing destination, your adventure awaits you right outside of your tent. However, there is a serious issue involved in Colorado camping. With so many choices, it's difficult to decide where to go. Let's try to narrow down your decision by exploring some of the most popular locations for camping in Colorado.

Colorado Camping in the San Juan National Forest

There are 39 Colorado camping sites located in the San Juan National Forest. While the scenery may vary, most have similar camping facilities. All of the Colorado camping sites in the San Juan National Forest are in close proximity to a variety of recreational activities. In most cases, Colorado camping season begins as soon as ski season ends and the campsites are free of snow. This usually occurs around Memorial Day weekend and ends after Labor Day. The most popular Colorado camping sites in the San Juan National Forest are near the larger lakes, major highways, and communities. Since the majority of the camping sites are on a first-come, first save basis, so be sure to plan ahead.

Most campgrounds include a table and fire pit at each site, as well as centrally located toilets, and drinking water. Some campgrounds will require you to remove your own trash. With the exception of the McPhee Campground, that has showers and sixteen sites with electric hookups, the San Juan National Forest does not provide showers, laundries, or hookups for recreational vehicles. If this is a concern, consider camping in Colorado near one of the hot springs!

Camping in Colorado Near the Hot Springs

Since it's the closest Colorado camping site to Steamboat Springs, Dry Lake is a popular destination for camping in Colorado. This oval-shape camp is situates amongst the aspens and pine forests, with well-spaced, private sites. The popularity of Dry Springs is because of its proximity to the town of Steamboat Springs. However, it is a peaceful environment for anyone wanting to escape the rustle and bustle of civilization. Dry lake is also within a short drive of the beautiful Strawberry Park Hot Springs.

Colorado Springs Camping

If you plan on exploring Pikes Peak and the Garden of the Gods, you might enjoy a Colorado Springs camping experience. The Garden of the Gods Campground is situated among the trees. A mountain creek runs through the property, where you can marvel at the fantastic views of Pikes Peak and the surrounding mountains. Amenities at this Colorado Springs camping site include swimming pools; whirlpool, laundry facilities, game room and arcade are available for use by RV guests. Additionally, there are three large, clean restrooms and shower areas, three coin-operated laundry areas, and two pavilions for group events. Guests enjoy valet & concierge services, as well as 24-hour security.

You visited Colorado and you fell in love with the mountains. Colorado camping allows you to spend a few nights as their guest.
