On Aug. 16, 1990, voters from the six-county Denver region approved a 0.1 percent sales tax to fund a baseball-only stadium. As a result of this vote, Coors Field Denver was constructed. Coors Field gets its name from the Coors Field Brewing Company of Golden Colorado, who purchased the naming rights prior to the stadium's completion.
At first, Coors Field seating was planned at 48,300. However, by the year 2001, attendance at Coors Field was so prolific that Coors Field increased seating to 50,445. Most of the Coors Field seating is green. However, the upper deck's 20th row is painted purple, designating one mile above sea level. The new seating that was created in the bleachers of Coors Field Denver is sometimes called "the rockpile".
In 1999, Coors Field Denver earned its reputation as the most prolific offensive ballpark in America. The Colorado Rockies baseball team and their opponents would hit over 303 home runs. Part of the magic of the Coors Field Denver is a baseball will travel nine percent farther at 5,280 feet than at sea level. Baseball experts estimate that a home run hit 400 feet in sea-level Yankee Stadium would travel about 408 feet in Atlanta and as far as 440 feet in Coors Field Colorado. Additionally, the 10-mile an hour wind at Coors Field Colorado has a mysterious way of turning fly balls into home runs. As if all this were not enough, the Coors Field magic continues when the low air pressures causes pitches that break less severely, and are therefore easier to hit.
Because of the location of the Coors Field stadium on Blake Street in Denver, along with the stadium's reputation as a home run haven, the Colorado Rockies baseball team is sometimes called the Blake Street Bombers.
Even if you do not plan on attending a Colorado Rockies baseball game, you may want to attend the one-hour tours of Coors Field Denver, which are conducted at various times throughout the week.
