Fiji is known for its natural beauty, tropical setting, and its friendly residents. However, many visitors love traveling when they can join in with the various Fiji events or Fiji festivals that occur throughout the year. Every town in the Fiji Islands have their own weeklong Fijian festival at different times but the two most popular are the Bula Festival and the Hibiscus Festival.
The Bula Fiji festival is held in Nadi the middle of July each year. During this unique and exciting Fiji event, you will be able to enjoy all the merriment of the locals, watch the parades, and even see Miss Bula crowned. Along with all the Fiji events planned for the festival, the locals come out in style dressed in cultural attire dancing and singing for this festive time.
There are a variety of sporting events in Fiji yearly. One of the most popular is the Outrigger International Competition. Fiji events such as these brings people from all over the world to participate in the event and even watch for those that are not daring enough to join in the fun. The course for this Fiji event is scenic, as you would imagine in this tropical paradise. The competition is home in the Nadi Bay each year in the month of April with various sporting events such as marathon races along with the outrigger competition.
Historical events in Fiji are either due to respect for explores, founders, other contributors to the islands, or religious. One such historical event in Fiji that includes a Fijian festival is honoring Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna, who was the father of modern day Fiji. The celebration is held the last Monday of May of commemorate the death of this founder. The entire week leading up to this day is marked by many Fiji festivals throughout all the islands. On the final day of the Fijian festival, an address is given by the President of Fiji along with residents entering the parliament grounds in order to polish Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna statue. This is one of the major historical events found in Fiji; however, other historical events in Fiji include Constitution Day in Fiji. This historical celebration is marked by the recognition, respect, and the upholding of the rights of all ethnic groups that call the Fiji Islands home. All the villages and towns scattered throughout the islands have their own historical events in Fiji at various times throughout the year.
One of the most popular Fiji festivals began in 2006 and is one that you must see to appreciate. The World Music Festival is held in Suva, Fiji during the month of June and showcases several local bands and international groups as well. Local bands will have you up and dancing to Fijian music, tribal music, reggae, and more. Many of the instruments used are traditional items such as the log drum.
If you are searching for a historical and cultural event in Fiji that will give a glimpse into the ancient ceremonies then you will have to stop in at the Sheraton Fiji Resort in Denarau to watch a re-enactment of the ancient ceremony of firewalking. This Fijian ceremony is performed weekly for all that wish to attend. The ceremony is ancient tradition that is considered to show great strength along with discipline of the mind, body, and spirit.
