There's surely something for everyone in Fort Collins Colorado. A college town in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, the city is known for its recreational offerings, breweries, festivals, a rich nightlife scene, and vibrant cultural offerings. Located 60 miles north of Denver and 46 miles south of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Fort Collins is also close to Cache la Poudre Canyon.
One of the many Fort Collins attractions, the Shambhala Mountain Center, welcomes visitors to come and relax. With classes on meditation, the contemplative arts, yoga, and the teachings of the Tibetan Buddhism, the Shambhala Mountain Center is a place where growth and reflection are encouraged. The 600-acre retreat is also home to the Great Stupa of Dharmakaya, the largest example of Buddhist sacred architecture in America. A number of spas through the region also provide a place to relax and escape from the stress of everyday life.
Other things to do in Fort Collins center around history and culture. Visits to the Bee Family Centennial Farm Museum, the galleries and stages of Lincoln Center, the Fort Collins Museum, and the Swetsville Zoo, provide enriching experiences.
The list of Fort Collins attractions includes several different breweries, running the gamut from small location operations to one of the biggest breweries in the West. Lauded for its innovation and dedicated to the craft beer movement, the Fort Collins Brewery welcomes guests to take tours, visit the tasting room, shop, and attend special events. Odell Brewing Company is another cool option for deciding on things to do in Fort Collins. The family-owned operation has a taproom and offers tours as well.
One of the most visited of all the Fort Collins attractions, the Anheuser-Busch brewery can be discovered on complimentary tours. Visitors see how a variety of beers are crafted and packed in the state-of-the-art brewery. Guests of legal drinking age can taste the new flavors and old favorites in the Hospitality Room, and a visit to the Clydesdale Hamlet is a cool way to cap off a visit. These majestic draft horses can weight up to 2,000 pounds.
For many, a vacation to Fort Collins means time to get out and enjoy what nature has to offer. One of the most beautiful canyons anywhere, Cache la Poudre, is a favorite for whitewater rafting, kayaking, and fishing. The headwaters of the river are found right in town. The name, which means a hiding place for gunpowder, stems to a historical incident when French trappers had to hide some of their munitions during a snowstorm. Today, the river is known as one of the best places to fish for wild trout. The river's rapids provide some of the biggest thrills in Fort Collins Colorado. Several local outfitters lead river excursions, bringing them to the rushing rapids for an exhilarating experience.
In addition to a long list of Fort Collins attractions, the town features many visitor amenities, such as interesting local restaurants, one-of-a-kind shops, a historic downtown that was the model for Disney World's Main Street USA, transportation providers, and other helpful resources. Fort Collins hotels, lodges, cabins, and motels are welcoming in every season.
While Fort Collins Colorado isn't in ski country, a variety of ski resorts can be found within two hours of town, including Eldora Mountain Resort, Berthoud Pass, the Loveland Ski Area, and the Keystone Resort.
But there are still plenty of things to do in Fort Collins during the colder months of the year, including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice-skating. Many of the museums, theaters, and cultural attractions provide an indoor escape from the cold. With 300 days of sunshine a year and relatively mild winters, those who dislike bad weather usually don't have to worry.
