The M/V Chenega is one of the newest Alaska Marine Highway Fast Vehicle Ferries. Derecktor Shipyards of Bridgeport, Connecticut built it at a cost of $34.5 million. The ship began its service in the summer of 2005. The Chenega"s designer is Nigel Gee & Associates. This British naval architecture firm has many years of high-speed ship design and building experience. Four diesel engines and four water jets power the Chenega. The hull form is a 235-foot catamaran that is famous for providing the highest transport efficiency of any high-speed ferry of its size. This ship operates in Southeast Alaska during the winter months and in Prince William Sound during the summer.
